As soon as a bed bug is spotted, it’s important to take immediate action to prevent the infestation from getting worse. Bed bug extermination is a multi-step process and it takes a professional, extensively trained in bed bug treatment, to fully eliminate the infestation.
Bed bugs are small, brownish, flattened insects that feed solely on the blood of animals. Adult bed bugs are about 3/16-inch long and reddish brown with oval, flattened bodies. Many people often mistake bed bugs for ticks or cockroaches. The nymphs resemble the adults, but are smaller and lighter in color. Bed bugs do not fly, but can move quickly across floors, walls, ceilings, furniture, and other surfaces. Female bed bugs lay their eggs in secluded areas, depositing one or more eggs each day and hundreds during a lifetime. Newly hatched nymphs are no bigger than a pinhead. As they grow, they molt (shed their skin) five times before becoming adults. A blood meal is needed between each successive molt.
Bed bugs are resilient. Nymphs can survive months without feeding and the adults more than a year. Bed bugs are nocturnal, which means they are mainly active at night and hide during the day. They do not have a method of defense, which is why they often seek out hiding places in a bed, behind a baseboard, in between wall-to-wall carpets, behind pictures, and in the tiniest cracks or crevices to sleep and avoid predators. Many people believe bed bugs are only found on a bed because that’s where the majority of people sleep and notice bed bug bites. However, bed bugs will establish hiding places that are near their source of food. For example, if a person always sleeps on a sofa, the bed bugs will hide in close proximity in order to venture out at night for a meal.
